Business Case of Scientific Glass, Inc: Inventory Management Environmental Scan

In order to perform the environmental scan for the Scientific Glass, commercial, social and technological aspects have been considered.

The case study provided for inventory management of the Scientific Glass demonstrates the commercial aspects of the company’s inventory management, in which profitability, market scale, and business are to be analyzed to assess how commercial aspects of the company affects the inventory management within the company (Church and Godley 2003). As taken from the case provided, it is found that Scientific Glass has been supplying durable and innovative designed laboratories products, which has helped it to gain superior customer based service (Wright and Schmidt 2011). In addition to this, the glassware market, where the company has been operating includes North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific region. Upon the assessment of the company’s estimated sale in these regions, it has been observed that in 2008 and 2009, Scientific Glass had its largest sales in the North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, which determines the largest growth of the sale of the company in the respective markets (Wright and Schmidt 2011).

The glassware market is regarded as one of the toughest market where the Scientific Glass Company  operates (Kaiser 2009). Based on this, it is recognized that the company has been facing certain level of competition due to existence of large and small size laboratory glassware providers such as Thermo Fisher Scientific and Ace Glass (Wright and Schmidt 2011). Concerning the market growth analysis , in which the company operates, it is identified that North American and European markets are rather saturated. On the other hand, Asia Pacific and Latin glassware markets are increasingly recognized as growing markets (Pulker, Schmidt and Aegerter 1999). Moreover, the growth of the industry has been estimated at 3% to 5% demonstrating the remarkable growth in past decades and this growth rate promises future growth of the industry in coming years (Wright and Schmidt 2011). In order to meet the demands in the Asia Pacific and Latin American market, the company has been facing issues related to effective and efficient inventory management, as it is unable to estimate the correct demand and supply in the selected regions.

The social aspect involved in the business case is concerning the social responsibility of the Scientific Glass Company. The inventory management of the company directly and indirectly involves the contribution and participation of suppliers and distributors. This is related to pursue them to focus on employing the green strategy in their manufacturing and production process. Apart from convincing the suppliers to employ and adopt environmental friendly manufacturing and production process, another social aspect of the Scientific Glass is maintaining sustainable relationship with its suppliers and distributors (Parker 2005).

It has been recognized that the Scientific Glass Company has been avoiding the significance of its strategy for its relationship with suppliers and distributors related to maintaining harmonized and stable relationship with them. Considering the growth of the industry and expected growth margin in the sale of the company in the regions of North America and Europe, developing good relationship with suppliers and distributors have become significantly vital for the growth in the sale of the company. In order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of inventory management within the glassware industry, developing relationship with suppliers and distributors has been proven to be rather effective in terms of increasing the growth of the sale of the company.

The role of technology has been recognized as vital and critical in determining the effective and efficient inventory management within the glassware industry. As identified in the given case study, the level of competition in the industry has been observed remarkably intensified based on the technological development and innovation in product design (Wright and Schmidt 2011). Different market players in the glassware industry mostly focus on offering diversified laboratory equipment along with full range of lab equipments and employing specialized laboratory glassware equipments (Atkinson 2008). On the other hand, these organizations have not been paying attention on the deliverance of the wide range of categories of laboratory equipment (Wright and Schmidt 2011). In the consequence of this, in order to survive in the market and to grow the total market sale in the industry, organizations in the industry are required to be focused on the adoption of large range of technological equipments, which help them in bringing about growth in the industry. Moreover, through the adoption of the advanced technological equipment, organizations in the industry will be able to meet the change requirements of the consumers. Different organizations in the markets now prefer to offer the product that provides innovative experience to consumers such as external designing on glassware that changes colors when the contents are heated above limited temperature and stacking system that allows glassware to be securely stored through occupying less space and external coating that mitigate the leakages (Wright and Schmidt 2011).
